Cottage Cheese Upper Thighs - Exactly Why Do You Have Them?

By Miriam Ucci

Cellulite is a change that occurs in the skin of most women. It comes in the appearance of dimples or bumps in the skin and usually affects areas such as the buttocks, the abdomen, the thighs, and the legs. There's no definite answer to what causes cellulite to form, although it is usually associated with hormonal activities in the body, and since women are prone to suffer from hormonal imbalance, they are the ones usually seen to have cellulite.

The truth is cellulite is not a medical condition. Cellulite is simply a term referred to the dimple-looking bumps that appear in the skin because of fat accumulation in the subcutaneous layer. That should make you understand the obese people are more prone to develop cellulite than those who have normal body weight. That would also mean that the more you live an active lifestyle, the less chances of you having orange peel skin.

Hormones play a very large role in the formation of cellulite. When the hormonal level in a woman's body is constantly fluctuating, it can result to weakening of the body tissues, including those that support the skin. Taking pills is one way to create hormonal imbalance. Most pills contain a high amount of estrogen that when consumed, can break down collagen and elastin, two of the skins' most important connective tissues. As a result, the skin will lose its elasticity and eventually, cellulite will begin to form.

Stress is also one factor that causes hormonal imbalance. It can also lower the immune system, which leads to several problems in the organs of the body, including the skin. Furthermore, the more stressed out a person is, the more toxins are collected in the body, leading to the breaking down of connective tissues in the skin, which in return would lead to the formation of cellulite.

People who love to smoke have a very high chance of having cellulite form in their skin. If you think smoking only leads to lung cancer, think again. The harmful chemicals from tobacco smoke that the body absorbs can actually make the skin dry, dull, and ugly. They can also weaken the immune system, exposing the skin to all kinds of serious conditions. Furthermore, the nicotine in cigarettes can promote poor blood circulation, which in turn leads to cellulite formation.

At this point in time, there is no exceptional treatment for cellulite. Though cosmetic surgery may work, it's only up to a certain degree and won't totally get rid of cellulite. The best thing you can do is to prevent cellulite from forming in the first place, and that through regular exercises that firm the skin, particularly in areas that are usually affected by cellulite. A well-balanced diet of fruits and vegetables would also help.
