Qi Gong: A Healing Practice

By Heidi Wingrain

Enhanced health and a long, productive life are among the factors for beginning a Qi Gong practice.. Still others begin the practice for increasing their self awareness and to achieve their full potential as a human being. Qi Gong is different from other exercise regimens because it lacks the destructive impact on the body by centering on gentle movements. While other activities take a toll on the body, the practice of Qi Gong enhances flexibility and mobility without placing stress on the joints and muscles.

There is confirmation that Qi Gong can aid in reducing blood pressure as well as boosting overall heart health. Studies also claim that the practice can strengthen the human immune system and have a positive effect on the stamina of the participant. The traditional practitioners did so to lengthen life span and to prevent many serious diseases and disorders.

A lot of of today's health problems are the result of constant stress. Qi Gong helps to lower this level of stress through breathing and movement, thereby decreasing the chances of getting a stress related illness or injury. The practice can trigger a clarity of mind that can help with despair and other mental illnesses. The techniques of awareness introduced in Qi Gong can alleviate the practitioner of anxiety and greatly improve emotional well being.

Qi Gong causes a quiet mind in the enthusiast. Even mainstream medicine has begun to realize and awaken to the power of positive thinking and clear headedness when it comes to remaining healthy and free from illness, both mental and physical. While the East has long understood the connection between mind and body, this understanding is now just beginning to reach Western shores.

The Chinese understand that there is a natural energy flow within the body andlabel this energy flow as Qi, pronounced "chee". This energy is thought to flow along channels or meridians which may be pictured as rivers running through the body. The practice of Qi Gong helps to move the energy along these channels and equips the mind to send energy where it is most needed to greatly enhance strength and to facilitate healing.
